ใน  1  โครินธ์ 13: 4 ให้มาตรฐานของความรักแบบคริสตชนว่าควรเป็นควรรักแบบใด คือความรักที่ไม่มีเงื่อนไข ความรักที่มีแต่ให้ เป็นความรักที่ไม่เรียกร้องสิ่งตอบแทน เป็นความรักที่เห็นประโยชน์ของผู้อื่นด้วย ไม่ใช่ความรักแบบที่เห็นแก่ตัว เช่น ฉันรักเธอแล้ว ทำไธอไม่รักฉันตอบ อย่างนี้เป็นต้น
