ตุรกีเพิ่มกำลังอารักขาสมเด็จพระสันตะปาปาเยือนนครอิสตันบูลเต็มพิกัด หวั่นเกิดเหตุร้ายและอาจจุดชนวนความไม่พอใจของชาวมุสลิมขึ้นอีกครั้งหนึ่ง

รัฐบาลตุรกีได้ส่ง นักแม่นปืน  นักกู้ระเบิด ตำรวจปราบจลาจลและหน่วยต่อต้านการก่อการร้ายของตุรกีจำนวนมหาศาลปูพรมลงไปในทุกจุดที่สมเด็จพระสันตะปาปา เบเนดิคต์ ที่ 16 จะเสด็จเยือน โดยเฉพาะที่นครอิสตันบูล อังการา และอิสเมียร์ ในกำหนดการเสด็จเยือนซึ่งจะเริ่มตั้งแต่วันนี้ ไปจนถึงวันที่ 1 ธันวาคม ขณะเดียวกันหน่วยคอมมานโดของกองทัพเรือพร้อมอาวุธครบมือก็จะลาดตระเวนอย่างเข้มงวดบริเวณช่องแคบบอสฟอรัสด้วย 

วาทะของสมเด็จพระสันตะปาปา ซึ่งตรัสในระหว่างเยือนเยอรมนี เมื่อเดือนกันยายนเชื่อมโยงการเผยแผ่ศาสนาอิสลามกับความรุนแรง  ได้สร้างความไม่พอใจให้กับชาวมุสลิมทั่วโลก  และกระแสดังกล่าวได้เริ่มเพลาลง  หลังจากที่สมเด็จพระสันตะปาปา  ได้ออกมาตรัสว่ารู้สึกเสียใจ ที่เป็นต้นเหตุให้ชาวมุสลิมไม่พอใจ

หลังจากกระแสความไม่พอใจได้ปะทุขึ้นมาอีก เมื่อสมเด็จพระสันตะปาปา ทรงยืนยันที่จะเยือนตุรกี แม้จะมีกระแสประท้วงคัดค้านจากชาวตุรกี อย่างกว้างขวางก็ตาม  และยิ่งกว่านั้น เมื่อวันที่ 2  พฤศจิกายนนี้ ชายคนหนึ่งได้ยิงปืนหลายนัดที่หน้าสถานกงสุลอิตาลี ในนครอิสตันบูล  พร้อมประกาศหากสมเด็จพระสันตะปาปาเสด็จเยือนตุรกี ตนจะบีบคอพระองค์ด้วยมือของตนเอง

แม้ทางการตุรกีจะมีประสบการณ์ในการอารักขาผู้นำคนสำคัญ ๆ ของโลกที่เยือนตุรกี  เช่น ประธานาธิบดีจอร์จ ดับเบิลยู บุช ผู้นำสหรัฐ และ นายบิลล์ คลินตัน อดีตประธานาธิบดีสหรัฐ มาแล้วก็ตาม  แต่ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านก่อการร้ายระดับอาวุโสของตุรกียังคงกังวลใจว่า การประท้วงอย่างกว้างขวางอาจนำไปสู่ความรุนแรงได้  เพราะกลุ่มอิสลามหัวรุนแรงหลายกลุ่มโดยเฉพาะที่เชื่อมโยงกับ เครือข่ายอัล กออิดะห์ ยังคงเคลื่อนไหวอยู่ในตุรกี  และได้เคยสร้างผลงานระเบิดฆ่าตัวตายที่โบสถ์ยิว และสำนักงานธุรกิจของอังกฤษ  สังเวยชีวิตคนไปเกือบ 60 คน เมื่อ 3 ปีที่แล้ว ผู้ต้องหาในคดีดังกล่าวราว 70 คน ยังอยู่ในระหว่างถูกดำเนินคดีในขณะนี้

ขณะที่ในนครอิสตันบูล  เมื่อวานนี้ ผู้สนับสนุนพรรคการเมืองเฟลิซิตี้ซึ่งเคร่งศาสนาได้พากันไปรวมตัวที่หน้าพิพิธภัณฑ์ฮาเกีย โซเฟีย ประท้วงและประณามการเสด็จเยือนของสมเด็จพระสันตะปาปา  ขณะที่กลุ่มสตรีราว 100 คน ได้ยื่นลายเซ็น 1 ล้านชื่อ เรียกร้องให้เปิดพิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งนี้  ให้ชาวมุสลิมได้เข้าไปประกอบศาสนกิจแทนที่จะใช้ต้อนรับสมเด็จพระสันตะปาปา

Turkey ramps up security for pope's visit

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) -- Turkish security teams took up positions around Ankara and Istanbul on the eve of Pope Benedict XVI's first visit to the predominantly Muslim country.

Small protests broke out in both cities, but authorities say security measures for the pope -- who angered Muslims worldwide with comments in September on Islam and violence -- will be tighter than they were for the visit of President Bush.

Benedict is to arrive at the Ankara airport on Tuesday at around noon, where he will meet briefly with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. (Read full story)

Erdogan waited until the day before Benedict's arrival to announce that he would make time to meet the pope.

News reports say some 3,000 police officers have been assigned to guard the pope. Snipers will watch from hillsides and tall buildings, and armored vehicles and riot police will be stationed near the areas he is scheduled to visit.

Police also were mobilizing and staking out spots in Istanbul, where Benedict will spend most of his four day stay.

"We have taken all the necessary measures and observations of the route the pope (will travel) and the places the pope will visit," Istanbul police spokesman Ismail Caliskan said.

A test of tolerance
The visit to Turkey will be a test of whether this pope can soften some of the Christian-Muslim tensions that boiled over after the pontiff quoted a Byzantine emperor who characterized some of the teachings of Islam's prophet Mohammed as "evil and inhuman."

The pontiff's presence will also be a test of the Turkish public's willingness to tolerate criticism of Islam and their ability to coordinate a massive and potentially problematic visit.

On Monday a group of around 100 pro-Islamic demonstrators displayed what they said were a million signatures for a petition demanding that the Haghia Sophia, now a museum in Istanbul, be declared a mosque and opened to worship for Muslims.

The Haghia Sophia was built in the 6th century as a Christian church, but was converted to a mosque in 1453 when Islamic armies conquered the city -- then a Christian metropolis called Constantinople.

In a speech on Sunday, Benedict said he was coming to Turkey as a friend of the Turks and asked his followers to pray for him. That same day, more than 25,000 Turks showed up to an anti-Vatican protest in Istanbul, asking the pope to stay at home.

Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said the visit was an opportunity for improved relations between the Christian and Muslim worlds.

"We would want this visit to be a cornerstone for (relations) between the two worlds," the government spokesman, Cicek, said after a Cabinet meeting Monday.

"Turkey is a country that is recognized worldwide for its tolerance and its hospitality. This is an opportunity for (Turkey) to display these qualities," he said.

Cicek said the protests were not directed toward the papacy, but toward the pope's comments on Islam.

"Some sector of the population are disturbed by the visit. Their disturbance is not because the pope is the pope, but because of the remarks he made," he said.

A brief statement from President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's office characterized planned talks with the pontiff as "opportunities for developing mutual understanding and cooperation," on bilateral relations between Turkey and the Vatican.

After spending Tuesday night in Ankara, Benedict will visit Ephesus and Istanbul, where he will meet with Bartholomew I, the Istanbul-based leader of the world's 300 million Orthodox Christians.

ANGELUS, FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT:  3 DECEMBER

A season of Light; to Turkey with Love


On Sunday, 3 December, the First Sunday of Advent, before praying the Angelus with the faithful gathered in St Peter's Square the Holy Father reflected on this season of preparation to celebrate the birth of Christ and referred to his Apostolic Visit to Turkey. The following is a translation of the Pope's Reflection, given in Italian.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I would like once again to thank the Lord, together with you, for the Apostolic Journey which I made to Turkey in these past few days:  I felt accompanied and sustained by the prayer of the entire Christian community. My cordial thanks to all!
Next Wednesday, at the General Audience, I will have the opportunity to speak more expansively about this unforgettable spiritual and pastoral experience, which I hope will bear fruits of good for an ever more sincere cooperation among all Christ's disciples and a profitable dialogue with Muslim believers.
I am now eager to renew my gratitude to all those who organized the Visit and helped in various ways to ensure that it went peacefully and fruitfully. I address a special thought to the Turkish Authorities and to the friendly Turkish People who gave me a welcome worthy of their traditional spirit of hospitality.
I would like here to recall above all the beloved Catholic community which lives on Turkish territory. I am thinking of it this Sunday as we enter the Season of Advent.
I was able to meet and celebrate Holy Mass with these brothers and sisters of ours who live in conditions that are frequently difficult. It is truly a small flock, variegated, rich in enthusiasm and faith, which we might say lives the Advent experience constantly and vividly, sustained by hope.
The Lord knocks at our door
In Advent, the liturgy frequently repeats and assures us, as if to overcome our natural diffidence, that God "comes":  he comes to be with us in every situation of ours, he comes to dwell among us, to live with us and within us; he comes to fill the gaps that divide and separate us; he comes to reconcile us with him and with one another.
He comes into human history to knock at the door of every man and every woman of good will, to bring to individuals, families and peoples the gifts of brotherhood, harmony and peace.
This is why Advent is par excellence the season of hope in which believers in Christ are invited to remain in watchful and active waiting, nourished by prayer and by the effective commitment to love. May the approaching Nativity of Christ fill the hearts of all Christians with joy, serenity and peace!
To live this Advent period more authentically and fruitfully, the liturgy urges us to look at Mary Most Holy and to set out in spirit together with her towards the Bethlehem Grotto. When God knocked at the door of her young life, she welcomed him with faith and love.
In a few days we will contemplate her in the luminous mystery of her Immaculate Conception. Let us allow ourselves to be attracted by her beauty, a reflection of divine glory, so that "the God who comes" will find in each one of us a good and open heart that he can fill with his gifts.
After the Angelus the Pope said: 
I am happy to greet all the English-speaking pilgrims and visitors present for this Angelus. Today, the First Sunday of Advent, the Church begins a new liturgical year. The Gospel speaks of Christ, the Son of Man, and invites us to prepare our hearts to receive him. May Advent be a time of purification that leads to love, as we look with hope to the dawn of his coming. I wish you all a pleasant stay in Rome and a blessed Sunday!
